Heinrich Schütz

Early Life

Heinrich Schütz was born on October 18, 1585, in Köstritz, Germany, as the eldest son of Christoph Schütz and Euphrosyne Bieger. His family moved to Weißenfels in 1590, where his father managed an inn. Schütz's musical talents were discovered by Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel in 1598, leading to his education at the noble court. After a brief stint as a choirboy, he studied law at Marburg before traveling to Venice from 1609 to 1612 to study music under Giovanni Gabrieli, who became his only teacher.

Career

In 1615, Schütz became the court composer for the Elector of Saxony in Dresden, where he married Magdalena Wildeck in 1619. His career flourished as he composed numerous works, including the first German opera, "Dafne," in 1627. Schütz's music was heavily influenced by Italian styles, and he is known for his sacred compositions, which were often smaller-scale due to the Thirty Years' War. His later works, including the "Musikalische Exequien," are considered masterpieces of early German music. Schütz's compositions reflect a blend of progressive and austere styles, showcasing his adaptability to the changing musical landscape of his time.

Later Life and Legacy

After a long and productive career, Schütz retired to Weißenfels, where he lived with his sister until his death from a stroke on November 6, 1672, at the age of 87. He was buried in the old Frauenkirche in Dresden, although his tomb was lost when the church was rebuilt. Schütz is remembered as one of the most significant composers of the 17th century, bridging the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and his influence can be seen in the works of later composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach.
