Биография
Early Life
Michał Kleofas Ogiński was born on September 25, 1765, in Guzów, Mazovia, in the Kingdom of Poland, although recent research suggests he may have been born near Salantai in present-day Lithuania. He hailed from a noble family; his father, Andrzej Ogiński, was a governor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Ogiński's early exposure to music came during visits to relatives in Słonim, where he experienced opera and ballet. He received a comprehensive education, studying music under notable figures such as Józef Kozłowski and violin from masters like Giovanni Battista Viotti. His education also included languages, thanks to his father's diplomatic missions.
Career
At just 20 years old, Ogiński became an envoy for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and served as an adviser to King Stanisław August Poniatowski during the Great Sejm from 1788 to 1792. His diplomatic career was marked by significant achievements, including receiving the Order of Saint Stanislaus and the Order of the White Eagle. He represented Poland in various countries, including the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, and played a role in the Kościuszko Uprising of 1794, commanding his own unit. After the uprising, he emigrated to seek support for Polish independence, eventually dedicating his only opera, "Zelis et Valcour," to Napoleon.
Legacy
Ogiński's contributions to music and diplomacy left a lasting impact. He withdrew from political life in 1810, returning to Vilnius, where he was introduced to Tsar Alexander I and became a Russian Senator. His legacy as a composer of late Classical and early Romantic music continues to be recognized, alongside his political endeavors that aimed at restoring Polish independence.
