Üzeyir Hacıbəyov

Early Life

Uzeyir Hajibeyov was born on September 18, 1885, in Aghjabadi, near Shusha, Azerbaijan. His father, Abdulhuseyn bey Hajibeyli, served as the secretary to the renowned poet Khurshidbanu Natavan, and his mother, Shirin, was raised in the Natavan household. Growing up in Shusha, a town celebrated for its rich musical heritage, Hajibeyov was deeply influenced by the local culture and music. He received his early education in a religious school, where he honed his skills in Arabic and Persian, and later attended a Russian-Azerbaijani school, where he was inspired by his teacher Mirza Mehdi Hasanzadeh.

Career

Hajibeyov is recognized as the father of Azerbaijani classical music and made significant contributions to the genre. He composed the first opera in the Islamic world, "Leyli and Majnun," in 1908, which marked a pivotal moment in the history of Azerbaijani music. His works included the national anthem of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and the anthem used during the Soviet period. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1938 and the Order of Lenin. He was also a professor and head of the Baku Academy of Music and served as Chairman of the Composers Union of Azerbaijan.

Legacy

Hajibeyov passed away on November 23, 1948, at the age of 63, leaving behind a profound legacy in Azerbaijani music. He was buried at the Alley of Honor in Baku. His contributions to music were celebrated posthumously, including a Google Doodle on his 128th birthday in 2013. In 2008, the National Bank of Azerbaijan minted a gold commemorative coin in his honor, solidifying his status as a pivotal figure in the cultural history of Azerbaijan.
