Биография
Early Life
Dmitry Borisovich Kabalevsky was born on December 30, 1904, in Saint Petersburg, Russia, into a family of Russian gentry. His father, a mathematician, initially encouraged him to pursue mathematics, but Kabalevsky's passion for the arts led him to study music instead. He graduated from the Academic Music College in Moscow in 1922 and continued his education at the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied composition under notable figures such as Georgy Catoire and Nikolai Myaskovsky, and piano with Alexander Goldenweiser.
Career
Kabalevsky's career as a composer, conductor, pianist, and pedagogue flourished in the Soviet Union. By the age of 26, he had already composed significant works, including his String Quartet, Op. 8, and Piano Concerto, Op. 9. He became a senior lecturer at the Moscow Conservatory in 1932 and a full-time professor by 1939. His prolific output included symphonies, operas, ballets, and music for films, contributing to the development of Soviet music education. He was instrumental in establishing a system of state-sponsored children's music schools, promoting musical literacy across the nation.
Legacy
Kabalevsky's influence extended beyond composition; he was a key figure in shaping Soviet musical ideology. His belief that "Beauty Evokes Kindness" encapsulated his approach to music education. Despite facing criticism for the psychological pressures within the educational system, his contributions to music and pedagogy earned him numerous accolades, including the Stalin Prize and the title of People's Artist of the USSR. Kabalevsky passed away on February 14, 1987, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of classical music.
