Биография
Early Life
Sofia Asgatovna Gubaidulina was born on October 24, 1931, in Chistopol, a town in the Tatar ASSR of the Russian SFSR. Her father, Asgat Masgudovich Gubaidulin, was a surveyor of Volga Tatar origin, while her mother, Fedosiya Fyodorovna, was a teacher of Polish-Jewish descent. Gubaidulina discovered her passion for music at the age of five, learning to play on a small grand piano. She studied at the Children's Music School under Ruvim Poliakov, where she began to explore the spiritual dimensions of music, influenced by composers like Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. However, she had to keep her spiritual interests hidden due to the Soviet regime's hostility towards religion.
Career
Gubaidulina studied composition and piano at the Kazan Conservatory, graduating in 1954. Despite the ban on Western contemporary music, she and her peers secretly studied modern scores, including those of Ives and Cage. She continued her studies at the Moscow Conservatory and joined the Union of Soviet Composers in 1961. Her innovative compositions often faced criticism, but she found support from notable figures like Dmitri Shostakovich. Gubaidulina's works, characterized by their exploration of microtonality and spiritual themes, gained recognition over the years, leading to her involvement in various film scores and the founding of a folk-instrument improvisation group called Astreja in the mid-1970s.
Personal Life
A devout member of the Russian Orthodox Church, Gubaidulina faced personal challenges, including a violent attack in 1973, which her friends speculated was linked to the KGB. After the fall of the USSR, she relocated to Appen, Germany, where she continued her work. Gubaidulina was married three times, with her second husband being writer and dissident Nikolai Bokov. Following the deaths of her loved ones in 2012, she paused her composing. Gubaidulina passed away from acute heart failure on March 13, 2025, at the age of 93.
Legacy
Throughout her life, Gubaidulina received numerous awards, including the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale and the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award. Her 90th birthday was celebrated with a release of her works by the Gewandhaus Orchestra, highlighting her significant contributions to contemporary classical music and her enduring spiritual influence in her compositions.
