Nouhad Wadie Haddad, known professionally as Fairuz, was born on November 21, 1935, in Beirut, Lebanon, into a Syriac Orthodox and Maronite Christian family. Her father, Wadie, an Assyrian from Mardin, Turkey, moved to Lebanon to escape persecution, while her mother, Lisa al-Boustani, hailed from Mount Lebanon. Fairuz married Assi Rahbani on January 23, 1955, and they had four children together. Fairuz converted to Greek Orthodoxy upon her marriage, and her family has been involved in the arts, with her son Ziad becoming a noted composer and playwright. Fairuz's legacy is marked by her numerous awards, including the Commander of the Legion of Honour and an honorary doctorate from the American University of Beirut, solidifying her status as one of the most celebrated artists in the Arab world.
