Биография
Early Life
Seiji Ozawa was born on September 1, 1935, in Mukden, a city in Japanese-occupied Manchuria, to Japanese parents. His early musical journey began at the age of seven with piano lessons. After returning to Japan in 1944, he studied under Noboru Toyomasu, focusing on the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. A pivotal moment in his life occurred after a rugby accident in 1950, which led him to shift his focus from piano performance to conducting, inspired by a performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. He graduated from the Toho Gakuen School of Music in 1957, excelling in both conducting and composition.
Career
Ozawa's international career took off after he won the first prize at the 1959 International Competition of Orchestra Conductors in Besançon, France. This recognition led to an invitation from Charles Munch to attend the Berkshire Music Center, where he honed his skills further. He became the music director of several prestigious orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, and most notably, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he served for 29 years starting in 1973. His influence extended to Europe, where he conducted the Vienna State Opera until 2010. In Japan, he founded the Saito Kinen Orchestra in 1984 and the Tokyo Opera Nomori in 2005, contributing significantly to the cultural landscape.
