Early Life

Chizuo Matsumoto, later known as Shoko Asahara, was born on March 2, 1955, in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, as the fourth son in a large, impoverished family of tatami-mat makers. From birth, he suffered from infantile glaucoma, which resulted in the loss of sight in his left eye and partial blindness in his right eye. At the age of six, he was enrolled in a school for the blind, where he quickly learned to navigate his environment and even became somewhat popular among his peers. However, he also exhibited bullying tendencies, extorting money from other students. As a teenager, he harbored grand ambitions of ruling a kingdom of robots and aspired to become the Prime Minister of Japan.

Career

After graduating high school in 1973, Matsumoto faced rejection from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Law and subsequently turned to acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, establishing a practice outside Tokyo. He married in 1974 and had six children. His career took a dark turn in 1981 when he was convicted of practicing pharmacy without a license, leading to a fine. Eventually, he founded the doomsday cult Aum Shinrikyo, which gained notoriety for its extreme beliefs and violent actions, including the infamous 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway that resulted in 14 deaths and thousands of injuries. Asahara was sentenced to death in 2004, and after a lengthy legal battle, he was executed on July 6, 2018.

Musical Contributions

Asahara was also known for his musical endeavors, releasing several singles and an album titled "シンセ音楽をたのしもう : 最聖麻原彰晃尊師のベスト26". His music often reflected the themes of his cult's ideology, with titles like "ヴァジラヤーナ" and "戦え、真理の勇者". These works contributed to the cult's identity and were part of his broader strategy to attract followers and spread his beliefs.
