Early Life

Lidia Andreyevna Ruslanova was born on October 14, 1900, in the village of Chernavka near Saratov, into a peasant family. Baptized as Praskovya Andrianovna Leykina-Gorshenina, she faced tragedy early in life, losing both parents by the age of five—her father in the Russo-Japanese War and her mother shortly thereafter. Raised in an orphanage, she discovered her passion for singing in a local parish children's choir, quickly becoming a soloist. Her talent was recognized by a factory owner who encouraged her to study at the Saratov Conservatory, although she found academic life unfulfilling. During World War I, she worked on a hospital train, where she met Vitalii Stepanov, with whom she had a child in 1917. After a tumultuous personal life, including a marriage that ended with her husband's death in the Russian Civil War, she adopted the surname Ruslanova.

Career

Ruslanova's professional singing career began at the age of 16, performing for military audiences during the Russian Civil War. She debuted as a professional singer in Rostov-on-Don in 1923, gaining fame for her unique voice and revival of traditional female solo performances. By the 1930s, she had become a prominent figure in Soviet music, performing across the country and becoming an artist of the state association of musical, variety, and circus enterprises in 1933. During World War II, she tirelessly toured the front lines, uplifting soldiers with her patriotic songs, including her signature pieces "Valenki" and "Katyusha." Notably, she performed at the Reichstag during the Battle of Berlin and financed the construction of Katyusha rocket batteries for the Red Army.

Legacy

Lidia Ruslanova's contributions to Soviet music and her patriotic spirit earned her numerous accolades, including the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR and several military medals for her efforts during the Great Patriotic War. Despite her popularity, her outspoken nature and connections to military figures led to scrutiny from Soviet authorities. She passed away on September 21, 1973, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most beloved singers of Russian folk songs, celebrated for her powerful voice and dedication to her country.
