Airat Ichmouratov is a Canadian composer and conductor known for his contributions to klezmer and classical music.
He is a founding member and clarinetist of the award-winning klezmer group Kleztory based in Montreal.
Ichmouratov comes from a distinguished Tatar theatrical family, with both grandparents being prominent figures in the arts.

Early Life
Airat Rafailovich Ichmouratov was born in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, Russia, into a prominent Tatar theatrical family. His grandfather was a celebrated playwright and his grandmother an esteemed actress, which set the stage for his artistic journey. At the age of seven, he began his musical education at Kazan Children's Music School No. 3, where he initially learned the recorder before switching to the clarinet. He continued his studies at Kazan Music College and the Kazan Conservatory, graduating in 1996. By 1993, he was already performing as an Associate Clarinetist with the Tatarstan Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Tatarstan State Symphony Orchestra.
Career
In 1997, Ichmouratov moved to Canada to attend the Orford Art's Centre Festival, where he met influential figures in the music world, including cellist Yuli Turovsky. He settled in Montreal in 1998, earning a master's degree from the University of Montreal. He founded the Muczynski Trio, which won multiple awards, including first prize at the National Music Festival in 2002. To support himself, he performed on the streets and in metro stations for four years, honing his skills in improvisation and various musical genres. His journey into composition began unexpectedly during his studies, leading to the creation of his first major work, a 45-minute String Quartet.
Personal Life
Ichmouratov is married to Elvira Misbakhova, a talented violist and violinist, and together they have two daughters. His diverse background and experiences have shaped his unique voice in the music world, blending klezmer and classical influences into his compositions and performances.
