Alice Merton

Early Life

Alice Florence Clarissa Merton was born on September 13, 1993, in Frankfurt, Germany, to a German mother and an Irish-born father. Her family's frequent relocations due to her father's job as a mining consultant took her from Germany to Connecticut, then to Oakville, Ontario, where she spent her formative years. By the age of thirteen, she had moved to Munich, where she learned German to connect with her grandmother and began writing her first songs. Merton's diverse upbringing across multiple countries instilled in her a sense of belonging to Canada, the UK, Germany, and France. In 2013, she pursued her passion for music at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim, earning a bachelor's degree in composition and songwriting.

Career

Merton's career took off in 2015 when she contributed to Fahrenhaidt's album, "The Book of Nature." Her breakout moment came with the release of her debut single, "No Roots," in late 2016, which resonated with listeners and topped charts globally. The song's themes of belonging and home struck a chord, leading to its inclusion in various media, including the NBC series "The Blacklist." Following the success of her first EP, released in February 2017, Merton signed with Mom + Pop Music and continued to release hit singles like "Hit the Ground Running" and "Lash Out." Her debut studio album, "Mint," was released in 2019, followed by her second album, "S.I.D.E.S.," in 2022, and she is set to release her third album, "Visions," in January 2026.
