Early Life

Amanda MacKinnon Palmer was born on April 30, 1976, in New York City and raised in Lexington, Massachusetts. Her father, Jack Palmer, was a physicist, and her mother, Katharine Mockett, was a computer programmer. After her parents divorced when she was just one year old, Amanda had limited contact with her father. She attended Lexington High School, where she was active in the drama club, and later graduated from Wesleyan University in 1998 with a BA in German Studies. During her time at university, she founded the Shadowbox Collective, a performance group focused on street theatre.

Career

Palmer's music career began in earnest when she met drummer Brian Viglione at a Halloween party in 2000, leading to the formation of the alternative rock duo, the Dresden Dolls. The duo gained recognition for their theatrical performances and unique sound, releasing their self-titled debut album in 2002. Palmer's artistic vision extended beyond music; she also created the musical production "The Onion Cellar" based on a story from Günter Grass's "The Tin Drum." Over the years, she has released several solo albums, including "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" and "There Will Be No Intermission," and has collaborated with various artists, including her husband, author Neil Gaiman.

Personal Life

Palmer has been open about her bisexuality and her experiences with open relationships. She has also discussed her struggles with mental health and the impact of her personal experiences on her music, notably in songs like "Voicemail for Jill," which addresses her abortions. In 2011, she married Neil Gaiman, and they have one son together. The couple announced their divorce in November 2022, after over a decade of marriage. Palmer's life and career continue to inspire a dedicated fanbase, and she remains a prominent figure in the music industry, known for her innovative approach to crowdfunding and artistic expression.
