Formation
The Animals, an iconic English rock band, were formed in 1962 in Newcastle upon Tyne. The original lineup included lead vocalist Eric Burdon, keyboardist Alan Price, guitarist Hilton Valentine, bassist Bryan "Chas" Chandler, and drummer John Steel. Initially known as the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, they adopted the name "The Animals"—a title that some say was inspired by their wild stage performances, while others attribute it to a friend of Burdon's named "Animal" Hogg.
Breakthrough
The band quickly gained recognition for their gritty, bluesy sound, which combined rock-edged pop singles with rhythm-and-blues-oriented album material. Their first major hit, "The House of the Rising Sun," released in June 1964, topped the charts and is often credited as one of the first folk-rock hits. The Animals became a significant part of the British Invasion, performing in the U.S. and appearing on popular shows like The Ed Sullivan Show.
Lineup Changes and Legacy
Throughout their career, The Animals experienced several lineup changes. Alan Price left the group in 1965, and keyboardist Dave Rowberry joined shortly after. The band disbanded in 1983 but left a lasting legacy in the music world, influencing countless artists and earning a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their music, characterized by a blend of blues rock, hard rock, and rhythm and blues, continues to resonate with fans today.
