Early Life

Anne Marie Blythe, known professionally as Ann Blyth, was born on August 16, 1927, in Mount Kisco, New York. Raised during the Great Depression, her family faced challenges after her father left, prompting her mother to support her and her elder sister through ironing. Blyth's artistic journey began early; she performed on children's radio shows from the age of five and joined the New York Children's Opera Company at nine, showcasing her vocal talent.

Career

Blyth's career took off on Broadway with her role in Lillian Hellman's acclaimed play "Watch on the Rhine" (1941-42), which won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. This success led to a contract with Universal Studios, where she made her film debut in "Chip Off the Old Block" (1944). Her breakout role came in 1945 when she portrayed the scheming Veda Pierce in "Mildred Pierce," earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress at just 16 years old. Over the next five decades, Blyth became a prominent figure in musical films, known for her powerful voice and captivating performances.

Personal Life and Legacy

In 1953, Blyth married obstetrician James McNulty, with whom she had five children and later ten grandchildren. After her marriage, she took a hiatus from her career to focus on her family. Blyth's contributions to the arts were recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She passed away at her home in Rancho Santa Fe, California, on June 24, 2026, at the age of 98, leaving behind a legacy of talent and dedication to the performing arts.
