Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas was born on October 13, 1980, in Glen Cove, New York. She grew up in a musically inclined family; her mother, Tina Douglas, was a dance teacher, and her father, Ken-Kaide Thomas Douglas, was a former singer. Ashanti's name is inspired by the Ashanti Empire in Ghana, symbolizing strength and influence, which her mother hoped she would embody. Her early exposure to music came when her mother discovered her singing talent at age 12. Ashanti began writing songs during her high school years and performed in local talent shows, eventually landing minor roles in films and music videos.

Career
