Early Life

Bernard "Buddy" Rich was born on September 30, 1917, in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish parents Bess Skolnik and Robert Rich, both of whom were vaudevillians. At just 18 months old, he joined his parents' act, showcasing his drumming talent dressed in a sailor suit. By the age of four, he was already headlining on Broadway, earning the nickname "Baby Traps the Drum Wonder." His early exposure to performance set the stage for a remarkable career in music, and by his teenage years, he was leading a band and earning a substantial salary as a child entertainer.

Career

Rich's professional jazz career began in 1937 with clarinetist Joe Marsala, and he quickly became a prominent figure in the big band scene, playing with legends like Bunny Berigan and Artie Shaw. Known for his exceptional drumming skills, he often considered himself the real leader of the band, famously stating that the drummer is the "quarterback" of the ensemble. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, he returned to music, forming his own big band with the support of Frank Sinatra. Rich's innovative style and technical prowess made him a sought-after performer, and he recorded numerous albums throughout his career, including "The Swinging Buddy Rich" and "Rich Versus Roach."

Personal Life

Rich married dancer and showgirl Marie Allison on April 24, 1953, and they had a daughter, Cathy, who later became a vocalist. Despite his success, Rich faced personal challenges, including a tax conviction in 1968 that led to financial difficulties. Known for his fiery temperament, he had a complicated relationship with fellow musicians, including a rivalry with Frank Sinatra that sometimes escalated into brawls. Nevertheless, they remained friends until Rich's death in 1987.
