Биография

Early Life

Charles Gates Dawes was born on August 27, 1865, in Marietta, Ohio, to a prominent family with deep military and political roots. His father, Rufus Dawes, was a Civil War General, and his family lineage included notable figures such as Edward Doty, a Mayflower passenger, and William Dawes, who famously rode with Paul Revere. Dawes grew up alongside his siblings, who were also influential in business and politics. He married Caro Blymyer in 1889, and they had two children, along with two adopted children.

Career

Dawes's career began in law after he was admitted to the bar in Nebraska, where he practiced until 1894. His business acumen led him to Chicago during the Panic of 1893, where he became involved in the gas industry, eventually presiding over several gas companies. His political career took off when he managed the Illinois campaign for William McKinley in 1896, leading to his appointment as Comptroller of the Currency, where he implemented significant banking reforms. Despite a brief foray into politics, including an unsuccessful Senate bid, Dawes returned to business, founding the Central Trust Company of Illinois.

Later Life and Legacy

Dawes's personal life was marked by tragedy when his son Rufus drowned in 1912, prompting him to establish homeless shelters in memory of his son. He continued to serve in various capacities, including as chairman of the board of City National Bank until his death on April 23, 1951, from coronary thrombosis. Dawes is remembered not only for his political contributions as the 30th Vice President of the United States under Calvin Coolidge but also for his receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925 for his work on the Dawes Plan, which addressed World War I reparations.
