Early Life

Charles-Valentin Alkan was born on November 30, 1813, in Paris, France, as Charles-Valentin Morhange. He hailed from a Jewish Ashkenazic family with roots in Metz, and was the second of six children. His father, Alkan Morhange, was a musician and later ran a private music school, which likely influenced Alkan's early musical education. He began his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris at a remarkably young age, showcasing prodigious talent on both the piano and organ.

Career

Alkan emerged as a prominent composer and virtuoso pianist in the 1830s and 1840s, sharing the spotlight with contemporaries like Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt. His works, characterized by their technical demands and innovative structures, include notable albums such as "Concerto for Solo Piano" and "Music for Organ or Pedal-Piano." Despite his brilliance, Alkan had few followers during his lifetime, although he garnered respect from notable musicians like Anton Rubinstein and César Franck, who dedicated works to him. His compositions were often overlooked until a revival in the 1960s, which brought renewed interest in his music.

Alkan's legacy is complex; while he was not widely recognized during his lifetime, he has since been acknowledged as one of the significant composers for the piano post-Beethoven. His music was championed by figures like Ferruccio Busoni, who ranked him among the greatest composers for the instrument.
