Formation and Early Years
Children of Bodom, a Finnish melodic death metal band, was formed in 1993 in Espoo, Uusimaa, originally under the name Inearthed by guitarist Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho and drummer Jaska Raatikainen. They were soon joined by bassist Samuli Miettinen, who contributed to the band's early songwriting. The group recorded their first demo, "Implosion of Heaven," in 1993, marking the beginning of their journey in the heavy metal scene. After Miettinen's departure in 1995, Laiho took over as the primary lyricist and composer, leading the band to incorporate keyboards into their music for the first time.
Rise to Prominence
In 1997, the band officially changed their name to Children of Bodom and solidified their lineup with the addition of Henkka Blacksmith on bass, Janne Wirman on keyboards, and later, Roope Latvala on guitar. Their debut album, "Something Wild," released in 1997, showcased their unique blend of melodic death metal and power metal, earning them a dedicated fanbase. Over the years, they released several critically acclaimed albums, including "Hatebreeder," "Follow the Reaper," and "Are You Dead Yet?" which solidified their status in the metal community. The band was known for their energetic performances and Laiho's virtuosic guitar skills, which were pivotal to their sound.
Legacy and Disbandment
Children of Bodom continued to evolve their sound throughout their career, releasing ten studio albums and several live recordings until their disbandment in December 2019. The final lineup included Laiho, Raatikainen, Blacksmith, Wirman, and guitarist Daniel Freyberg. Their influence on the melodic death metal genre is profound, with many citing them as one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time. In 2022, a bar dedicated to the band, Bodom Bar & Sauna, opened in Espoo, celebrating their legacy and impact on the music scene.
