Chris Hadfield

Early Life

Chris Austin Hadfield was born on August 29, 1959, in Sarnia, Ontario, to Eleanor and Roger Hadfield. Growing up on a corn farm in Southern Ontario, he developed a passion for flying at a young age, inspired by the Apollo 11 Moon landing he witnessed on television at the age of nine. Hadfield attended White Oaks Secondary School and graduated as an Ontario Scholar from Milton District High School in 1977. His early interest in aviation led him to join the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, where he earned glider and powered pilot scholarships. After high school, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces, eventually earning a B.Eng. degree in mechanical engineering from the Royal Military College of Canada in 1982.

Career

Hadfield's career as an astronaut began when he was selected from over 5,000 applicants in 1992 to join the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). He became the first Canadian to perform a spacewalk and served as commander of the International Space Station (ISS). His extensive experience includes being NASA's chief capsule communicator for 25 Space Shuttle missions and directing operations at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia. Beyond his astronaut duties, Hadfield is also a musician, known for his album "Space Sessions: Songs From a Tin Can" and singles like "I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing)" and "Jewel in the Night."

Personal Life

On December 23, 1981, Hadfield married his high school sweetheart, Helene, and they have three children together. A devoted fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he famously wore a Leafs jersey under his spacesuit during a space mission. Hadfield has also engaged with the public through music, singing the Canadian National Anthem at a hockey game and inspiring the Canadian soccer team ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. His contributions to both space exploration and music have made him a beloved figure in Canada and beyond.
