Chubby Checker, born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941, in Spring Gully, South Carolina, grew up in the projects of South Philadelphia. He was raised in a musical environment, influenced by his parents, Raymond and Eartle Evans, and his two brothers. By the age of 11, he had formed a street-corner harmony group and began performing vocal impressions of popular artists like Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. His nickname "Chubby" was given by his boss at a local poultry market, and it was during this time that he caught the attention of music industry figures who would help launch his career.

Career

Checker's career took off in the late 1950s when he recorded a novelty single for Dick Clark, which led to a contract with Cameo-Parkway Records. His breakthrough came in 1960 with his rendition of "The Twist," which became a massive hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 not just once, but twice. This unprecedented success was bolstered by his energetic performances on television, particularly on The Ed Sullivan Show. Throughout the 1960s, Checker continued to popularize dance music with hits like "Let's Twist Again" and "Limbo Rock," solidifying his status as a rock and roll icon.

Personal Life

Chubby Checker married Dutch model Catharina Lodders on April 12, 1964, after proposing to her in 1963. The couple welcomed three children, including musician Shan Egan, and Checker is also the father of former WNBA player Mistie Bass. His personal life has been intertwined with his music, as seen in his song "Loddy Lo," which was inspired by his wife.

Legacy

Checker's influence on music and dance is undeniable, with "The Twist" being named the biggest chart hit of all time by Billboard in 2008. He was inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2014 and is set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025, marking his lasting impact on the music industry.
