Formation
Creedence Clearwater Revival, commonly known as CCR, was formed in 1959 in El Cerrito, California. The band originally started as the Blue Velvets, consisting of John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, and Stu Cook, who met in junior high school. They initially played instrumental covers and later evolved into Tommy Fogerty & The Blue Velvets when John’s older brother, Tom Fogerty, joined the group. In 1964, they signed with Fantasy Records and were renamed the Golliwogs, during which time they began to develop their unique sound.
Breakthrough
In 1967, the band adopted the name Creedence Clearwater Revival and began to gain significant popularity. Their most prolific period occurred between 1969 and 1971, during which they released several critically acclaimed albums, including "Green River" and "Cosmo's Factory," both of which topped the Billboard 200 chart. CCR became known for their distinctive blend of rock, swamp rock, and country rock, characterized by John Fogerty's raspy vocals and socially conscious lyrics. The band’s hit songs, such as "Fortunate Son" and "Proud Mary," solidified their place in rock history.
Legacy
Despite disbanding in 1972, CCR's influence on music remains profound. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and have been recognized as one of the greatest American rock bands. Their songs often addressed themes of social justice and the Vietnam War, with "Fortunate Son" becoming an anthem of protest. Rolling Stone has ranked them among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and their albums continue to be celebrated for their cultural significance.

Creedence Clearwater Revival, commonly abbreviated as CCR or simply Creedence, was an American rock band formed in El Cerrito, California, in 1959. The band consisted of lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter John Fogerty; his brother, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty; bassist Stu Cook; and drummer Doug Clifford. These members had played together since 1959, first as the Blue Velvets and later as the Golliwogs, before settling on Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1967. The band's most prolific and successful period, between 1969 and 1971, produced 14 consecutive top-10 singles and five consecutive top-10 albums in the United States, two of which—Green River (1969) and Cosmo's Factory (1970)—topped the Billboard 200 chart. The band performed at the 1969 Woodstock festival in upstate New York and was the first major act signed to appear there.
