Cypress Hill

Formation

Cypress Hill is an American hip-hop group formed in 1988 in South Gate, California. The group originally consisted of brothers Senen Reyes (Sen Dog) and Ulpiano Sergio Reyes (Mellow Man Ace), who emigrated from Cuba to the U.S. in 1971. They teamed up with Lawrence Muggerud (DJ Muggs) and Louis Freese (B-Real) to create a group initially named DVX (Devastating Vocal Excellence). However, after Mellow Man Ace left to pursue a solo career, they rebranded themselves as Cypress Hill, named after a street in South Gate.

Breakthrough

Cypress Hill achieved mainstream success with their self-titled debut album released in 1991, which featured hit singles like "The Phuncky Feel One" and "How I Could Just Kill a Man." Their follow-up album, "Black Sunday," released in 1993, solidified their place in hip-hop, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and featuring the iconic track "Insane in the Brain." In 1996, they expanded their lineup with Eric Bobo and released "III: Temples of Boom," further showcasing their unique blend of hip-hop and rock influences.

Legacy

Cypress Hill is recognized as one of the first Latin American hip-hop groups to gain significant recognition, selling over 20 million albums worldwide. Their innovative sound and style have influenced a wide range of artists across genres, including Eminem and rock bands like Linkin Park and Korn. In 2019, they made history by becoming the first hip-hop group to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking their lasting impact on the music industry.
