Early Life

Daron Malakian, an Armenian-American rock musician, was born in the United States and has made significant contributions to the music scene as a guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist. He is best known as a member of the influential metal band System of a Down, where he serves as the second vocalist and guitarist. His musical journey began early, influenced by a rich tapestry of cultural sounds, including Armenian, Arabic, and Greek music, which he was exposed to during his childhood. Malakian has often credited the legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum as a major influence on his artistic development, stating that her music shaped his love for music from a very young age.

Career

In addition to his work with the band, he also leads his own project, Daron Malakian and Scars on Broadway, where he takes on multiple roles as the lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and songwriter. Outside of music, Malakian is known for his passion for sports, being a dedicated fan of teams like the Washington Commanders, Edmonton Oilers, and Los Angeles Kings. He has held season tickets for the Kings since 1999 and has a notable collection of Oilers memorabilia. Despite his public persona, Malakian maintains a relatively private life; he is not married and has no children, although he has been in a relationship with Gayané Khechoomian since 2019. A unique aspect of his lifestyle is his choice to abstain from alcohol since the age of 21, while openly admitting to smoking cannabis regularly.
