Биография
Early Life
Dinah Washington, born Ruth Lee Jones on August 29, 1924, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was a prominent American singer and pianist. She moved to Chicago as a child, where she became deeply involved in gospel music, playing piano for her church choir at St. Luke's Baptist Church. Her musical journey began early, as she directed the choir and sang gospel music, eventually winning an amateur contest at Chicago's Regal Theater with her performance of "I Can't Face the Music".
Career
Washington's professional career took off after she won a talent contest at the age of 15, leading her to perform in various Chicago clubs, including the famous Garrick Stage Bar. It was here that she adopted the name Dinah Washington, suggested by club owner Joe Sherman. She made her recording debut in 1944 with "Evil Gal Blues" and quickly gained popularity, becoming one of the most successful Black female recording artists of the 1950s. Known as the "Queen of the Blues" and the "Queen of the Jukeboxes", she recorded a wide variety of music, including jazz, blues, and R&B, with notable albums like "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes!" and "Dinah Washington Sings the Blues".
Personal Life and Death
Washington's personal life was marked by multiple marriages, with reports varying on the number of husbands she had, ranging from six to nine. Tragically, she passed away at the young age of 39 on December 14, 1963, due to a combination of prescription drugs. She is buried in Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois, leaving behind a rich legacy in music that continues to influence artists today.
