Rickles, emigrated from Lithuania, while his mother, Etta, was born to Austrian immigrants. After graduating from Newtown High School in 1944, Rickles enlisted in the United States Navy, serving on the USS Cyrene during World War II. Following his discharge in 1946, he pursued a career in acting, studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. However, after struggling to find work, he turned to stand-up comedy, where he developed his signature insult style.

Career

Rickles rose to fame in the 1950s, becoming known as "The Merchant of Venom" for his sharp, humorous insults. His big break came when he performed at a nightclub in Miami Beach, where he caught the attention of Frank Sinatra, who became a supporter and helped elevate Rickles' career. He became a popular performer in Las Vegas and made numerous television appearances, including a starring role in the sitcom C.P.O. Sharkey. Rickles also had a successful film career, with notable roles in movies like *Run Silent, Run Deep* and *Casino*. His unique comedic style earned him a Primetime Emmy Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Personal Life

Rickles married Barbara Sklar in 1965, and they had two children, Mindy and Larry. He often reflected on his family life, noting that his grandchildren were more impressed by his role as Mr. Potato Head in *Toy Story* than his stand-up career. Rickles was known for his friendships with celebrities, including Frank Sinatra and Bob Newhart, and he performed at the inaugurations of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, despite being a lifelong Democrat.

Don Rickles passed away on April 6, 2017, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and respect in the comedy world. Many fellow comedians and celebrities paid tribute to his talent, highlighting his unique ability to blend humor with warmth.
