Early Life

Ogbuagu Alban Uzoma Nwapa, known professionally as Dr. Alban, was born on August 26, 1957, in Oguta, Imo State, Nigeria, into a middle-class family as one of ten children. He is of Igbo descent and spent his formative years in his hometown, where he received his secondary education at Christ the King College. At the age of 23, he moved to Sweden to pursue a degree in dentistry at Lund University. To support himself during his studies, Dr. Alban worked as a DJ at the Stockholm club Alphabet Street.

Career Beginnings

Dr. Alban's music career began in 1990 when he met producer Denniz Pop at the SweMix label. Together with rap artist Leila K, he released his debut single "Hello Afrika," which marked the start of his rise in the music industry. Adopting the stage name Dr. Alban as a nod to his dental studies, he quickly gained recognition with his debut album, which featured hits like "Hello Afrika" and "No Coke," both of which became million-selling singles. The album achieved gold certification in several countries, including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Breakthrough Success

His second album, "One Love," released in 1992, catapulted him to international fame, featuring the iconic single "It's My Life." This track topped charts in multiple countries, including Israel, Austria, and Germany, and sold over two million copies across Europe. Dr. Alban's unique blend of Eurodance, reggae fusion, and hip-hop resonated with audiences, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in the music scene. Over the years, he has released numerous albums and singles, including "Sing Hallelujah!" and "Let the Beat Go On," further showcasing his versatility as an artist.
