Early Life

Dame Olga Maria Elisabeth Friederike Schwarzkopf was born on December 9, 1915, in Jarotschin, Prussia (now Poland). She was the daughter of Friedrich Schwarzkopf, a school headmaster, and Elisabeth Fröhlich. Her musical journey began early, performing as Eurydice in a school production of Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice" in 1928. In 1934, she started her formal music studies at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik, initially training to be a mezzo-soprano under Lula Mysz-Gmeiner and later under Maria Ivogün.

Career

Schwarzkopf made her professional debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin on April 15, 1938, as the Second Flower Maiden in Wagner's "Parsifal." Her career flourished post-World War II after she was granted Austrian citizenship, allowing her to perform internationally. She became renowned for her roles in Mozart operas, particularly as Donna Elvira in "Don Giovanni" and the Countess in "The Marriage of Figaro." Her American debut came in 1954 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and she later performed at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall. Throughout her career, she was celebrated for her interpretations of lieder and operatic works, solidifying her status as one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century.

Legacy

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's discography is extensive, showcasing her exceptional talent in both operatic and lieder performances. She is particularly noted for her portrayals in Mozart and Richard Strauss operas, and her recordings of Strauss's "Four Last Songs" are considered definitive. Despite her remarkable achievements, her legacy is somewhat complicated by her past membership in the Nazi Party, which has been a subject of discussion and criticism. Nevertheless, she remains a towering figure in the world of classical music, often regarded as the greatest German lyric soprano of her time.
