Estelle

Early Life

Estelle Fanta Swaray, known simply as Estelle, was born on January 18, 1980, in Hammersmith, London. Growing up in a large family as the eldest of nine children, her upbringing was steeped in religious values, which meant secular music was not allowed in her home. Instead, she was surrounded by spiritual music, particularly American gospel and West African sounds. Despite these restrictions, Estelle found her way to hip-hop through her uncle, who introduced her to artists like Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane. By her early twenties, she had decided to pursue a career in music, transitioning from her job as a nanny to the vibrant music scene.

Career

Estelle's music career began at the iconic London hip-hop record store Deal Real, where she was encouraged to perform. Her early performances led to collaborations with notable artists and her debut in 2003 with the single "Excuse Me." A pivotal moment came when she met Kanye West in Los Angeles, which led to an introduction to John Legend, who produced tracks for her debut album, "The 18th Day," released in 2004. The album featured the hit single "1980," which reached number 14 on the UK Singles Chart. Estelle's unique blend of genres, including R&B, reggae, and hip-hop, helped her carve out a niche in the music industry, earning her a MOBO Award for Best Newcomer.

Artistic Development

Estelle's artistry is marked by her eclectic influences, drawing from a wide range of genres and artists, including Mary J. Blige and Ella Fitzgerald. She has been recognized for her versatility as a rapper, singer, and songwriter, with peers like John Legend praising her talent. Estelle has also made significant contributions to the UK hip-hop scene by establishing her own label, Stellarents, to support emerging artists. Her career continues to evolve, with multiple albums and collaborations with prominent musicians, solidifying her status as a key figure in contemporary music.
