Early Life

Eva Marie Cassidy was born on February 2, 1963, in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Oxon Hill and Bowie, Maryland. The third of four children, she was raised in a creative household; her father, Hugh Cassidy, was a teacher, sculptor, musician, and former army medic, while her mother, Barbara, was a German horticulturist. Eva's passion for music blossomed early, as her father taught her to play guitar at the age of nine. By eleven, she was performing with a local band called Easy Street, showcasing her talent at various events despite her shyness.

Music Career

Cassidy's musical journey took off in the 1980s when she collaborated with several bands, including the techno-pop group Characters Without Names. In 1992, she released her first album, "The Other Side," a duet with go-go musician Chuck Brown, which featured her iconic rendition of "Over the Rainbow." Despite her immense talent, Cassidy remained relatively unknown outside the Washington, D.C. area until her untimely death from melanoma in 1996 at the age of 33. Her posthumous albums, including "Songbird" and "Live at Blues Alley," have since garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated following.

Personal Life and Legacy

Eva Cassidy's personal life was marked by her relationship with Chris Biondo, a fellow musician, with whom she lived until her cancer diagnosis. Her legacy continues to inspire; in 2001, a book titled "Songbird: Eva Cassidy: Her Story By Those Who Knew Her" was published, and her life has been adapted into various artistic forms, including a musical. A mural honoring her was created in Annapolis, Maryland, in 2022, and a feature-length documentary, "The Essence of Eva," premiered in 2025, celebrating her enduring impact on music and culture.
