Farhan Akhtar

Early Life

Farhan Akhtar was born in Mumbai, India, on January 9, 1974, to renowned screenwriters Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani. He is the second child in the family, with an elder sister, Zoya Akhtar, who is also a prominent writer and director. Growing up in a creative household, Farhan was exposed to the arts from a young age. His parents divorced when he was young, and his father later married actress Shabana Azmi. Despite the familial changes, Farhan was raised in a nurturing environment, where he developed a passion for storytelling and the arts. He attended Maneckji Cooper School and later pursued a law degree at HR College in Mumbai. Farhan comes from a lineage of Urdu poets, being the grandson of Jan Nisar Akhtar and great-grandson of Muztar Khairabadi.

Career

Farhan's career began at the age of 17 when he worked as an apprentice in film distribution and direction for Yash Chopra's "Lamhe". He later co-founded Excel Entertainment in 1999 with Ritesh Sidhwani, marking a significant milestone in his career. His directorial debut, "Dil Chahta Hai" (2001), was a critical and commercial success, earning him acclaim for its fresh narrative style and character development. This film is often credited with ushering in a new wave in Indian cinema. Farhan is also known for his musical contributions, particularly in the film "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara", which showcased his singing talent. He has explored various genres, including Indian film music, pop rock, and acoustic music, and has received several accolades, including Filmfare Awards.

Personal Life

Farhan married Adhuna Bhabani in 2000, and they have two daughters, Shakya and Akira. After 16 years of marriage, they announced their separation in 2016, finalizing their divorce in 2017. In 2018, he began dating video jockey Shibani Dandekar, and they married in a non-religious ceremony in February 2022. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Farhan is an advocate for social issues, launching the Men Against Rape and Discrimination (MARD) campaign and serving as a Regional UN Women Ambassador for South Asia since 2016. In 2023, he was honored with the Kamla Bhasin Award for his efforts in promoting gender equality in the region.
