FKA twigs

Early Life

Tahliah Debrett Barnett, known professionally as FKA Twigs, was born on January 17, 1988, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. The only child of an English mother, a dancer and gymnast, and a Jamaican father, a musician, she grew up in a creative environment. Raised primarily by her mother and stepfather, Barnett was exposed to various musical influences from a young age, including jazz. She attended St Edward's School, where she participated in opera and ballet lessons, and later moved to South London at 17 to pursue a career in dance, enrolling at the BRIT School.

Career Beginnings

FKA Twigs began her music career in 2012 with the self-released EP1, which showcased her unique sound blending electronic music and R&B. She gained recognition with her second EP, EP2, released in 2013, which was produced in collaboration with Arca. Her debut studio album, LP1, released in 2014, received critical acclaim, reaching number 16 on the UK Albums Chart and earning a nomination for the Mercury Prize. Twigs continued to evolve artistically, releasing subsequent works such as MAGDALENE and CAPRISONGS, which further established her as a genre-defying artist.

Personal Life

In addition to her music career, Twigs has faced personal challenges, including health issues that led to surgery for fibroid tumors in 2017. She has been open about her experiences, advocating for awareness around women's health issues. Twigs has also navigated high-profile relationships, including an engagement to actor Robert Pattinson and a tumultuous relationship with Shia LaBeouf, which ended in legal disputes over allegations of abuse. Despite these challenges, she continues to push boundaries in her art, exploring themes of pain and resilience in her work.
