Formation
Genesis was formed in 1967 at Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey, by founding members Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford, and drummer Chris Stewart. The group initially recorded a demo tape that caught the attention of Jonathan King, leading to a recording contract with Decca Records. Their debut album, "From Genesis to Revelation," was released in 1969, marking the beginning of their journey in the music industry.
Evolution and Key Releases
Throughout the 1970s, Genesis evolved significantly, both musically and in terms of lineup. The band’s most commercially successful lineup included keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford, and drummer/singer Phil Collins, who joined in 1970. Genesis were an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, in Godalming, Surrey, in 1967. The band's longest-lasting and most commercially successful line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. In the 1970s, during which the band also included singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett, Genesis were among the pioneers of progressive rock. Banks and Rutherford were the only constant members throughout the band's history.
