George Clinton

Early Life

George Edward Clinton was born on July 22, 1941, in Kannapolis, North Carolina, and later grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey. During his teenage years, he formed a doo-wop group called the Parliaments, inspired by Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, while working as a barber. Clinton is color blind, which he described as seeing shades of gray rather than colors, a unique perspective that influenced his artistic vision. He also co-owned a barbershop known as "Silk Palace," which became a hub for local musicians in the 1950s and 1960s.

Career

Clinton's career took off in the 1960s when he became a staff songwriter for Motown. Despite initial setbacks, he found success with his bands Parliament and Funkadelic in the 1970s, creating a distinctive sound that blended funk with elements of psychedelia and Afrofuturism. His collective dominated the music scene, producing over 40 R&B hit singles and three platinum albums. Clinton's solo career began with the 1982 album "Computer Games," and he continued to influence genres like hip-hop and G-funk throughout the 1990s.

Personal Life

Clinton has been married multiple times, first to Carol Hall, with whom he had several children, and later to Stephanie Lynn Clinton, from whom he divorced in 2013. He is currently married to Carlon Thompson-Clinton, his long-time manager. Clinton faced personal tragedy with the death of his son, George Clinton Jr., in 2010. He has also been recognized for his contributions to music, receiving a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Clinton College in 2024. Clinton's life has been marked by creativity, resilience, and a touch of the extraordinary, including claims of witnessing unidentified flying objects.
