Биография

Early Life

Gian Carlo Menotti was born on July 7, 1911, in Cadegliano-Viconago, Italy, near Lake Lugano. He was the sixth of ten children in a financially prosperous family, with a father who was a businessman and a mother who was a talented amateur musician. Menotti's early exposure to music came from his mother, who ensured all her children received music lessons. A child prodigy, he began composing at the age of seven and wrote his first opera, "The Death of Pierrot," at eleven. His formal musical education began at the Milan Conservatory when he was just 13 years old.

Career

Menotti's career took off after he graduated from the Curtis Institute in 1933. His first mature opera, "Amelia Goes to the Ball," premiered in 1937 and was a critical success, leading to performances at prestigious venues including the Metropolitan Opera. The 1950s marked the pinnacle of his acclaim, with works like "The Consul," which won the Pulitzer Prize for Music, and the Christmas opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors," the first opera written for television in America. Menotti's operas are characterized by their lyrical expressiveness and dramatic intent, often reflecting his Italian heritage.

Later Life

In his later years, Menotti faced personal challenges, including the end of his long-term relationship with fellow composer Samuel Barber. He moved to Scotland, where he adopted an American actor and continued to compose until his death on February 1, 2007. Menotti's legacy as a composer and librettist remains significant, with his works continuing to be performed worldwide, showcasing his contributions to the operatic tradition.

Извлечение из Википедии

Gian Carlo Menotti was an Italian composer, librettist, director, and playwright who is primarily known for his output of 25 operas. Although he often referred to himself as an American composer, he kept his Italian citizenship and never officially became an American citizen. One of the most frequently performed opera composers of the 20th century, he wrote his most successful works in the 1940s and 1950s. Highly influenced by Giacomo Puccini and Modest Mussorgsky, Menotti further developed the verismo tradition of opera in the post-World War II era. Rejecting atonality and the aesthetic of the Second Viennese School, Menotti's music is characterized by expressive lyricism which carefully sets language to natural rhythms in ways that highlight textual meaning and underscore dramatic intent.
