Биография
Early Life
Gil Evans was born on May 13, 1912, in Toronto, Canada, as Gilmore Ian Ernest Green. He was raised in a family that frequently moved across North America, eventually settling in California. His early exposure to music came from listening to jazz legends like Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, which inspired him to study piano and arrange music. By 1933, while attending the College of the Pacific, he founded his first jazz big band, Gil Evans & His Orchestra.
Career
Evans's career took off when he became an arranger for the Claude Thornhill Orchestra from 1941 to 1948. His innovative arrangements were known for their complexity, often challenging musicians. In 1948, he collaborated with Miles Davis and others to create a nonet, which allowed for a unique blend of instruments and styles, leading to the iconic recordings of "Birth of the Cool." Throughout his career, Evans was instrumental in the development of various jazz styles, including cool jazz, modal jazz, and jazz fusion, and he is celebrated for his collaborations with Miles Davis.
Personal Life
Evans married Lillian Grace after the "Birth of the Cool" sessions, but little is known about this marriage. He later married Anita Cooper and had two children, one of whom, Miles, played trumpet in his Monday Night Orchestra. Evans passed away at the age of 75 in Cuernavaca, Mexico, following complications from surgery.
Legacy
Gil Evans's contributions to jazz have been recognized with numerous awards, including multiple Grammy Awards and induction into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. His innovative orchestration and collaborations have left a lasting impact on the jazz genre, influencing generations of musicians.
