Gipsy Kings

Formation

The Gipsy Kings, a French-Spanish musical group, was formed in 1978 in Arles, France. The band emerged from the duo of José Reyes and Manitas de Plata, who played rumba flamenca in the 1970s. After their split, Reyes began performing with his sons—Nicolas, François (Canut), André, Patchaï, and Paul (Pablo)—under the name José et Los Reyes. Following the death of their father in 1979, the brothers continued to perform, joined by their cousins Diego, Paco, and Tonino Baliardo, as well as Chico Bouchikhi, a French Moroccan musician. They adopted the name Gipsy Kings and began playing at weddings and festivals, eventually gaining recognition in upper-class venues like Saint-Tropez.

Breakthrough

The Gipsy Kings achieved significant success with their self-titled third album released in 1987, which included hits like "Djobi Djoba" and "Bamboléo." This album marked a turning point, spending forty weeks on the US charts, making it one of the few Spanish-language albums to achieve such longevity. Despite some lineup changes, including the departure of Pablo Reyes in 1988 due to hearing issues and Chico Bouchikhi in 1991 over financial disagreements, the group continued to thrive.

Legacy

The Gipsy Kings have left an indelible mark on the music scene, blending Catalan rumba, flamenco, salsa, and pop. They have received numerous accolades, including the Victoires de la Musique award for Group of the Year in 1990 and a Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album in 2014. Their unique sound and vibrant performances have made them a staple in world music, influencing countless artists and captivating audiences worldwide.
