Early Life

Hattie McDaniel was born on June 10, 1893, in Wichita, Kansas, to formerly enslaved parents. The youngest of 13 children, she grew up in a musical household, with her mother, Susan Holbert, being a gospel singer and her father, Henry McDaniel, a Civil War veteran. The family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where Hattie attended school and began to showcase her talent, winning a gold medal for reciting a poem at a contest in 1910. Her early exposure to music and performance set the stage for her future career.

Career

McDaniel's career began in the early 1910s when she performed with her sister in an all-female minstrel show. She later joined Professor George Morrison's Melody Hounds and transitioned to radio in the mid-1920s. McDaniel recorded numerous songs for Okeh Records and Paramount Records, establishing herself as a talented singer-songwriter. Her breakthrough role came in 1939 when she portrayed Mammy in "Gone with the Wind," earning her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first African American to win an Oscar. Despite facing criticism for her roles, she maintained a successful career in film and music until her passing in 1952.

Personal Life

Throughout her life, McDaniel experienced several marriages, including to Howard Hickman and George Langford, both of which ended tragically. She later married James Lloyd Crawford in 1941, but their relationship was tumultuous, leading to a divorce in 1945. McDaniel was also active in community service during World War II, serving as chairman of the Negro Division of the Hollywood Victory Committee, providing entertainment for soldiers. Despite her success, she faced criticism from some in the African American community for her roles in Hollywood, which they felt perpetuated stereotypes.

Legacy

Hattie McDaniel's impact on the entertainment industry is profound. She was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1975 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2006, she became the first black Oscar winner to be honored with a U.S. postage stamp. Her contributions to film and music continue to be celebrated, and she remains a significant figure in the history of African American performers in Hollywood.
