Hayley Westenra

Early Life

Hayley Dee Westenra was born on April 10, 1987, in Christchurch, New Zealand. Growing up in a musically inclined family, her grandmother was a singer and her grandfather a pianist. Encouraged by a teacher at the age of six, she began performing and soon learned to play multiple instruments, including the violin, piano, guitar, and recorder. By the age of 11, she had already performed over 40 times on stage, showcasing her talent in various roles, often taking on male parts. Her early education at Cobham Intermediate School later saw a performing arts building named in her honor.

Career

Westenra's professional journey began at the age of 12 when she recorded a demo album, "Walking in the Air," which garnered attention and led to a recording contract with Universal Records New Zealand. Her self-titled debut album and the Christmas album "My Gift to You" followed, but it was her 2003 album "Pure" that catapulted her to international fame. "Pure" became the fastest-selling international debut album in UK classical chart history, selling over two million copies worldwide and earning her the title of New Zealand's best-selling artist across all genres.

Philanthropy and Personal Life

Beyond her music career, Westenra is known for her philanthropic efforts. She has performed for various charities, including UNICEF, where she became one of the youngest ambassadors. In her personal life, she has been married twice, first to sound engineer Arnaud Sabard and later to record producer Chris McFarland. She welcomed her first child in July 2022 and is expecting her second child in August 2026.
