Formation
Helloween is a German power metal band formed in 1984 in Hamburg, emerging from the local music scene with members from bands like Iron Fist and Powerfool. The original lineup featured Kai Hansen on vocals and guitar, Michael Weikath on guitar, Markus Grosskopf on bass, and Ingo Schwichtenberg on drums. The band's name was inspired by the film "Halloween," and they quickly made a name for themselves by signing with Noise Records and releasing their first full-length album, "Walls of Jericho," in 1985, which helped to define the speed metal genre.
Breakthrough and Lineup Changes
Helloween's early years were marked by significant releases, including the acclaimed "Keeper of the Seven Keys" albums, which solidified their status in the power metal scene. After Hansen left the band in 1989 to form Gamma Ray, Michael Kiske took over as lead vocalist, leading to a new era for the band. However, the 1990s brought turmoil, with Schwichtenberg's tragic death in 1995 and numerous lineup changes, leaving only Grosskopf and Weikath as original members by 2016.
Legacy
Despite the challenges, Helloween has been recognized as one of the most influential European heavy metal bands of the 1980s and is often referred to as the "fathers of power metal." Their music has inspired countless bands and they continue to tour and release new material, maintaining a dedicated fanbase and a significant place in the heavy metal genre.

Helloween is a German power metal band founded in 1984 in Hamburg by members of bands Iron Fist, Gentry, Second Hell and Powerfool. The band has at times been called one of the most influential European heavy metal bands of the 1980s. Its first lineup consisted of singer and guitarist Kai Hansen, bassist Markus Grosskopf, guitarist Michael Weikath and drummer Ingo Schwichtenberg. By the time Hansen left Helloween in 1989 to form Gamma Ray, the band had evolved into a five-piece, with Michael Kiske taking over as lead vocalist. Schwichtenberg and Kiske both parted ways with Helloween in 1993; Schwichtenberg died two years later as the result of suicide. Between then and 2016, there had been numerous line-up changes, leaving Grosskopf and Weikath as the only remaining original members. As a septet, their current lineup features all of the surviving members of the Keeper of the Seven Keys lineup, in addition to the remaining members from the Keeper of the Seven Keys: The Legacy-era.
