Henry Mancini, born Enrico Nicola Mancini on April 16, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio, was raised in West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, by Italian immigrant parents. His father, Quintiliano "Quinto" Mancini, was a laborer and amateur musician, while his mother, Anna, immigrated as an infant. Mancini's musical journey began at age eight when he started learning the piccolo, inspired by a film score that ignited his passion for music composition. By age 12, he was studying piano and orchestral arrangement, eventually producing arrangements for local bands and even for Benny Goodman.
Career
After serving in the military during World War II, Mancini joined the Glenn Miller Orchestra as a pianist and arranger. In 1952, he joined Universal-International's music department, where he contributed to over 100 films, including notable works like "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and "The Glenn Miller Story." His collaboration with writer/producer Blake Edwards on the television series "Peter Gunn" marked the beginning of a prolific partnership that spanned 35 years and included iconic films such as "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "The Pink Panther."
Personal Life and Death
Mancini married singer Virginia "Ginny" O'Connor in 1947, and they had three children together. He passed away from pancreatic cancer on June 14, 1994, while working on the Broadway adaptation of "Victor/Victoria."
Legacy
Mancini's influence extended beyond his own compositions; he mentored future composers like John Williams and established a scholarship at UCLA. The Henry Mancini Institute was founded in his honor, and his contributions to film music have been recognized with numerous awards, including four Academy Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
