Herb Alpert

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Herbert Alpert was born on March 31, 1935, in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, to Jewish immigrant parents from Ukraine and Romania. Growing up in a musically inclined family, Alpert began playing the trumpet at the age of eight, inspired by his father, a mandolin player, and his mother, a violin teacher. He attended Fairfax High School, where he initially excelled in gymnastics before focusing on music. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he joined the USC Trojan Marching Band and began his career as a songwriter in the late 1950s.

Rise to Fame

Alpert gained fame as the leader of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass in the 1960s, blending jazz and pop music. He co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss, which became a significant label in the music industry. After a brief hiatus from chart success, Alpert made a comeback in 1979 with the instrumental hit "Rise," which topped the Billboard Hot 100. He continued to release albums consistently, with his 2013 album "Steppin' Out" winning a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album.
