Formation

Incubus is an American rock band formed in 1991 in Calabasas, California, by vocalist Brandon Boyd, lead guitarist Mike Einziger, and drummer José Pasillas while they were still in high school. Initially, the band performed under various names before settling on "Incubus" for an upcoming show. They quickly gained traction in the local music scene, playing at iconic venues on the Sunset Strip, such as the Whisky a Go Go and the Roxy. Their early sound was influenced by bands like Phish and Primus, and they recorded their first EP, "Let Me Tell Ya 'Bout Root Beer," in 1994.

Key Releases and Lineup Changes

In 1995, Incubus expanded their lineup by adding DJ Gavin Koppel, known as DJ Lyfe. The following year, they released their debut album, "Fungus Amongus," through their own label. Their big break came when they signed a seven-record deal with Sony's Immortal Records, leading to the release of the EP "Enjoy Incubus" in 1997. Over the years, the band saw several lineup changes, with bassist Dirk Lance leaving in 2003 and being replaced by Ben Kenney. DJ Lyfe was succeeded by Chris Kilmore in 1998. In 2024, Nicole Row joined as a background vocalist, marking the latest evolution of the group.

Incubus is known for their unique blend of genres, incorporating elements of alternative rock, funk metal, and hip-hop into their music. They gained recognition in the early 2000s as one of the most popular alt-metal bands, praised for their positive lyrical approach and musical versatility.
