Ingeborg Bachmann

Early Life

Ingeborg Bachmann was born on June 25, 1926, in Klagenfurt, Austria, to Olga and Matthias Bachmann. Her father, a schoolteacher, was an early member of the Austrian National Socialist Party. Growing up with a sister and a brother, she pursued higher education in philosophy, psychology, German philology, and law at various universities, ultimately earning her PhD from the University of Vienna in 1949 with a dissertation on Martin Heidegger's existential philosophy.

Career

Bachmann's literary career began after she worked as a scriptwriter and editor at the Allied radio station Rot-Weiss-Rot, where she published her first radio dramas. She became part of the literary circle known as Gruppe 47, which included notable writers like Paul Celan and Heinrich Böll. In 1953, she moved to Rome, where she wrote poetry, essays, and opera libretti in collaboration with composer Hans Werner Henze, gaining international recognition. Her notable works include the poetry collections "Die gestundete Zeit" and "Anrufung des Grossen Bären."

Later Life and Legacy

Despite her literary success, Bachmann struggled with alcoholism and medication addiction in her later years. Tragically, she died on October 17, 1973, following a fire caused by a cigarette while hospitalized for burns. After her death, her work gained significant attention, particularly among feminist scholars, and she became a prominent figure in the Frauenliteratur movement. In 2021, her childhood home was purchased by the state of Carinthia to be transformed into a museum dedicated to her life and work.
