Early Life

Irene Papas, born Eirini Lelekou on September 3, 1929, in the village of Chiliomodi, Greece, was destined for the arts from a young age. Her mother, a schoolteacher, and her father, a classical drama teacher, nurtured her early passion for acting. By the age of seven, her family moved to Athens, where she began her formal education at the National Theatre of Greece Drama School. Despite finding the school's acting style outdated, she graduated in 1948, ready to embark on a remarkable career.

Career

Papas began her career in traditional theatre, performing in plays by Ibsen and Shakespeare before transitioning to film in 1951. She gained international acclaim for her roles in iconic films such as "The Guns of Navarone" (1961), "Zorba the Greek" (1964), and "Z" (1969). Her powerful performances in films like "The Trojan Women" (1971) and "Iphigenia" (1977) solidified her status as a leading actress. In addition to her film work, she showcased her singing talent in the 1968 album "Songs of Theodorakis," further demonstrating her versatility as an artist.

Personal Life and Legacy

Irene Papas was married twice, first to film director Alkis Papas and later to producer José Kohn, though both marriages ended in divorce or annulment. She was actively involved in charitable work, serving on the board of the Anna-Marie Foundation. In her later years, she battled Alzheimer's disease and passed away on September 14, 2022, at the age of 93. Papas left behind a legacy celebrated through numerous awards, including the National Board of Review Award for Best Actress and honors from France and Spain. In 2017, the National Theatre of Greece's drama school was renamed in her honor, ensuring her contributions to the arts would be remembered for generations to come.
