Jacopo Peri

Early Life

Jacopo Peri, born Jacopo di Antoni di Francesco Peri, emerged from a middle-class family, with his origins debated between Rome and Florence. He claimed to be from Rome, likely due to the political climate favoring Roman identities under the Medici rule. His early musical education began at the Servite monastery of Santissima Annunziata in Florence, where he honed his skills as a singer and organist. The monastery was a significant hub for aspiring musicians, providing a pathway to the prestigious Medici court.

Career

Peri's career took off in the late 16th century when he began working at the Medici court around September 1588. Initially serving as a tenor singer and keyboard player, he soon transitioned into composition. His early works included incidental music for plays and madrigals. In the 1590s, he became closely associated with Jacopo Corsi, a prominent patron of the arts, and together they sought to revive the grandeur of ancient Greek tragedy. This collaboration contributed to the development of opera, with Peri writing what is considered the first opera, the mostly lost "Dafne," and the earliest surviving opera, "Euridice," premiered in 1600.
