James Arthur

Early Life

James Andrew Arthur was born on March 2, 1988, in England to Shirley Ashworth and Neil Arthur. His parents separated when he was just two years old, leading to a childhood marked by family instability. Arthur spent part of his youth in voluntary foster care, living with his father for three days a week and in foster care for the remaining days. He attended several schools, including the British School of Bahrain, where he lived for four years before returning to England at age 13.

Career

Arthur's musical journey began in earnest in 2011 when he uploaded his songs to platforms like SoundCloud and YouTube, alongside releasing his independent album "Sins by the Sea." His big break came in 2012 when he auditioned for the ninth series of The X Factor, where he captivated audiences with his emotional performances. His debut single, a cover of Shontelle's "Impossible," topped the UK Singles Chart and became the most successful winner's single in the show's history, selling over 2.5 million copies worldwide. Following this success, Arthur released several albums, including "James Arthur," "Back From the Edge," and "It’ll All Make Sense in the End," showcasing his evolution as an artist.

Personal Life

Arthur's personal life has been as dynamic as his career. He began a relationship with dancer Jessica Grist in 2012, which has seen its ups and downs, including a split in 2021 and a reconciliation in 2022, when they welcomed their daughter. A passionate advocate for mental health, Arthur became an ambassador for the charity SANE after publicly discussing his struggles with anxiety and depression. He is also a vegan and a supporter of Middlesbrough F.C. and Rangers F.C.
