Биография
Early Life
Jan Dismas Zelenka, originally named Jan Lukáš Zelenka, was born on October 16, 1679, in Louňovice pod Blaníkem, a market town in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. He was the eldest of eight children in a family where his father, Jiří Zelenka, served as a schoolmaster and organist, likely introducing him to music at an early age. Zelenka received his musical education at the Jesuit college Clementinum in Prague, where he honed his skills on the violone, a type of bass viol. His earliest known composition, a school drama titled "Via laureta," dates back to 1704.
Career
In 1709, Zelenka began working for Baron Johann Hubert von Hartig in Prague, a notable music connoisseur. This position led to his appointment as a violone player in the royal orchestra of Dresden, where he gained access to an extensive music library. Zelenka's compositions, characterized by harmonic inventiveness and mastery of counterpoint, earned him respect among his contemporaries, including Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann. Throughout his career, he produced numerous works, including the "Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis" and various orchestral pieces, contributing significantly to the Baroque music repertoire.
Legacy
Despite being somewhat overlooked after his death in 1745, Zelenka's music was highly regarded during his lifetime. His innovative approach to counterpoint and clarity in composition influenced many musicians, including his students like Johann Joachim Quantz. Bach held Zelenka in high esteem, even using his works in performances at St. Thomas' Church in Leipzig. Today, Zelenka is celebrated for his contributions to classical and Baroque music, with a growing recognition of his artistic legacy.
