Jaron Zepel Lanier was born on May 3, 1960, in New York City and raised in Mesilla, New Mexico. His upbringing was marked by tragedy; his mother, a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp, died in a car accident when he was just nine years old. Following this, he lived in tents with his father before embarking on an ambitious project to build a geodesic dome home.
