Early Life

Nathan Jonas "Joey" Jordison was born on April 26, 1975, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Steve and Jackie Jordison. Growing up in a rural area outside of Waukee, he was the eldest of three siblings. Joey's musical journey began at a young age when he received his first drum kit as a gift from his parents at the age of eight. Initially self-taught, he later honed his skills with an instructor who introduced him to R&B and jazz techniques, which contributed to his diverse musical style. He formed his first band, Modifidious, while still in elementary school, and they gained local recognition by supporting bands like Atomic Opera.

Career

In 1995, Jordison's life took a pivotal turn when he was approached by Paul Gray to join a new band called the Pale Ones, which would later be known as Slipknot. As the original drummer, designated as #1, he played a crucial role in shaping the band's sound, which became a defining force in the nu metal genre. Slipknot's innovative style, characterized by heavy percussion and aggressive riffs, earned them a dedicated following. Jordison also contributed to the horror punk supergroup Murderdolls as a guitarist. Throughout his career, he faced challenges, including health issues that led to canceled shows, but he remained a prominent figure in the metal scene until his departure from Slipknot in 2013.

Joey Jordison's impact on the music world was profound. He was recognized as one of the greatest drummers in metal, receiving accolades such as being voted the best drummer of the past 25 years by Rhythm magazine in 2010 and named the world's greatest metal drummer by Loudwire in 2013. Following his untimely death in 2021, tributes poured in from fellow musicians, and Slipknot dedicated their seventh studio album, "The End, So Far," in his memory. Jordison's technical prowess and innovative drumming style continue to inspire musicians around the globe.
